What is an automobile air conditioner?

It’s just a refrigerator installed in your car.  Just like the refrigerator in your kitchen, a car’s air conditioning system is designed to move heat from one place (the inside of your car) to some other place (outside your car).  The result is that it gets nice and cool inside your car.  But that happens only if your AC system is working properly.

What parts of my car’s AC system need to be serviced?

Regular AC service is not normally required, but it’s a good idea to have your system inspected by a trained mechanic every year before the summer begins.

When does my air conditioner need to be serviced?

We think you’ll know when you have a problem.  Unlike some other car problems, a broken AC system hits you in the face.  You’ll notice that the air blowing out of your vents doesn’t seem to be quite as cool as it used to be.  Sometimes there will be no cooling at all, and the air will feel as hot as it is outside.

There are a number of things that can go wrong in your AC system.  The compressor could fail, you could have a leak somewhere in your system, your refrigerant levels could be too low, or you could have dirt or contaminants in the system.

Don’t worry if you notice water dripping under you car.  This is normal since your air conditioner also acts as a dehumidifier.  But be sure that it’s really water, and not some other fluid.  Anything but water could indicate a serious problem with some other part of you car.

What could happen if I don’t maintain my air conditioner?

The good news is that a broken air conditioner is not a safety concern.  However, it will affect your comfort during hot days.  And if your AC system is working, but not working at optimal efficiency, your gas mileage will suffer.  That’s a real concern now that gas prices are through the roof.

Do yourself a favor and have your air conditioner inspected at least once a year by a professional mechanic.
