About Constant-Velocity Joints
(also known as CV Joints)
Properly maintaining your car is always the best way to help ensure that it will not let you down. And preventive maintenance is almost always cheaper than repairing something after it breaks. If your car has front wheel drive or all wheel drive, then you have CV joints which require regular maintenance.

What are CV joints?
CV joints are part of your car’s drivetrain, and are mainly used in front wheel drive and all wheel drive vehicles. They permit the engine’s driveshaft to transmit power to the axles and wheels at variable angles with very little friction.
What can go wrong with CV joints?
CV joints are packed at the factory with grease, and then covered with a rubber or plastic boot to keep out dirt and water. The most common problem with CV joints occurs when this protective boot is damaged. When this happens the CV joint will usually corrode and eventually fail.
How often do CV joints need to be serviced?
We recommend regular visual inspections of the boots that cover your CV joints every 5,000 miles. This should be done by a trained mechanic while your car is up on the lift.
If a cracked or damaged boot is detected early, the CV joint can be cleaned, repacked with grease and covered with a new boot. If, while driving, you hear a clicking sound coming from underneath your car, it can be a sign that one or more of your CV joints needs to be replaced.
What could happen if I don’t repair a damaged CV joint?
If you continue to drive with a damaged CV joint bad things will eventually happen. Not only will you need to repair the failing joint, but you may also need to replace axles and other costly components. The worst case is that a joint separates while you’re driving, and you will be stranded along the side of the road.
Regular CV joint inspections are your best bet. You’ll save money if you detect small problems before they turn into major repairs.
We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have. Just give us a call or stop in to see us.
