About Turbochargers and Superchargers

If you would like to know more about superchargers and turbochargers (also called turbos), this article will give you an overview of these performance boosting devices.

The mechanics at Washburn Motorsports are experts when it comes to performance tuning, upgrades and repairs for Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche automobiles.  Give us a call today and we’ll be happy to talk with you about your performance needs.

What are Turbochargers and Superchargers?

Both turbos and superchargers are ‘forced induction systems.’  They compress the air flowing into an engine to increase power.  The advantage of compressing the air
is that more air flows into the cylinder during the intake stroke.  Along with the additional air, additional fuel is also forced into the cylinder, and more fuel means more power.

The key difference between turbos and superchargers is the way they themselves are powered.  A supercharger is powered by a belt or chain that is directly connected to the engine.  It gets its power the same way as the camshaft, water pump and alternator.  Superchargers are frequently factory installed.

Turbos get their power from the engine’s exhaust.  The exhaust gases pass through a turbine as they exit the exhaust manifold.  This turbine then powers a fan that compresses clean air before it enters the intake manifold to be mixed with fuel.

How much extra power can I get from a turbocharger or supercharger?

Like most things, it varies.  However, typical power boosts from turbochargers are in the range of 30% to 40%, and that’s very impressive.

Can I add a turbo or a supercharger to my car?

Probably.  Turbo kits fit many cars, and we can install superchargers on some cars including the Audi R8, the Audi S4 and others.

Our performance parts suppliers sell very high quality turbochargers and superchargers that are designed as aftermarket add-ons, and we have many years of experience installing, replacing and servicing these devices.  Feel free to call us if you would like to know if we can install a turbo or supercharger on your car.

What should I do to maintain my turbo in good working order?

By design, turbos operate at very high speeds, high temperature and high pressure, and - like most other systems in your car - they should be serviced regularly.

Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your turbo:

  1. Use a very high quality engine oil (we recommend synthetic oils only) and change it regularly.  A good rule of thumb is every 4,000 to 5,000 miles.

  2. Service your turbo at recommended intervals (see manufacturer guidelines).

  3. Don’t try to work on your turbo yourself; use only qualified and experienced mechanics.

  4. We recommend using only high-test (or premium) gasoline.

  5. Avoid over-revving the engine until the engine oil warms up to normal operating temperatures.

  6. Let your engine idle for a couple of minutes before turning your car off.

The bottom line on turbos and superchargers?

These are fantastic devices that can significantly boost your engine’s power.  If you maintain and service your turbo properly you should enjoy many miles of performance driving.
